Description of the
training program

As part of our commitment to increase stroke treatments globally, the World Stroke Organization has embarked into the development of mechanical thrombectomy training programs intended to increase thrombectomy knowledge, procedural skills, and patient access. We have developed educational programs that serve communities according to their specific needs:

A trained neurointerventionalist with vast experience in Mechanical Thrombectomy (MT) (proctor) will travel to a region that would be selected by the World Stroke Organization leadership. A high-volume MT center will host the training sessions. Local physicians that have been trained in neuroendovascular procedures, with hospital privileges to perform neurointerventions can participate. The training will involve trainees from the main hospital and other selected institutions.
The proctor will be available 24/7 during 7 days for all the emergent MT cases that present to the institutions involved. Ideally, all trainees should participate in the cases. The main operator during the MT procedure will be the trainee with privileges in the hospital where the patient presents, while the others can participate as observers. The training week will include lectures regarding stroke triage, MT indications, procedural techniques, and hands-on sessions with flow models. Local faculty will be invited to participate in the lectures.

This is a 20-hour intensive curriculum which combines both didactic and skills sessions for practicing neurointerventionalists and their teams. The didactic sessions focus on patient selection for MT, challenging case discussion, complication management, tips for successful endovascular access, emerging data/new MT trials, ICU care of the post-MT patient, among others. Parallel lectures will run for the NIR technicians and nurses. The hands-on sessions are guided by experienced faculty and include demonstration, training, and feedback with different MT devices and techniques. The participants can practice MT techniques under fluoroscopy, utilizing C-arms and flow models of varying difficulty. Camera models and other practice stations are also available. The hands-on sessions include the physician, nurse and tech working as a team. The team-based approach aims to improve the quality and success of MT cases.

Intended Audience: This course is designed for practicing Neuroendovascular physicians. Interested physicians should apply with:

– Proof of primary specialty training: neurosurgery, neuroradiology, or neurology
– Proof subspecialty training
– Ongoing case log that demonstrates their current work in neurointervention
